Persuasive Letters
Following the the excitement of a Snow Day earlier in the year, the children were asked to write a persuasive letter to the Department of Education to convince them they shouldn't have to make up the time at the weekend. As you can imagine, they didn't take much encouragement to put pen to paper!
Volcano Poems
In literacy, the children have produced a beautiful collection of poetry work. Using simile, metaphor and personification, they brought to life the visceral unpredictability of volcanoes with real poetic flair.
Our Y5 Work
Writing
We asked the Nottingham Adventure Centre to come in to school to help us with our newspaper writing. The children looked at how to rescue people from rivers and what to do if an emergency struck on board a canal boat!
The staff recently had training on ‘Talk4Writing’ and so, in Year 5, we decided to give it a go! The children wrote an explanation text on ‘How does a dishwasher work?’. A series of actions were created to help the children remember what to include in their writing.
Book Week
Dragon Costumes
On the final day of our dragon-themed Book Week, the children came to school dressed as their very own dragons. It was apparent that the children had all put great efforts into designing their costumes and consequently looked fabulous on the day.
Book Swap
Year 5 swapped books and read with Year 2 children on the final day of Book Week.
Author Visit
The children had a fantastic Book Week last week, learning all about dragons and meeting Mark Robertson, the author of some of the books we have read and enjoyed. Mark talked to the children about his illustrations and shared his own work. The children then created their own character, which he designed and drew there and then – it was amazing!

The Day the Crayons Quit
Here’s a photo of some work we created when studying The Day The Crayons Quit. The book tells the story of a box of crayons who rebel against their owner… they’re simply fed up of not being used enough/too much. In the end, we decided to recreate the scene of protest and joined in with the crayons in fighting against crayon inequality in the toy box! |
