Y6 – Summer 2018
Dear Parents/Carers,
Summer is (hopefully) finally on the way! We hope you had a lovely Easter break. This is a very important term for your child as they move forward into the final few months and weeks of their time at St Mary’s.
In English we continue to gear them up for their SATs next month by arming them with the writing, grammar and reading comprehension skills to enable them to achieve their very best. In Maths we will work hard to increase their arithmetic speed and boost their understanding to help them answer a range of reasoning questions too. We also have some exciting opportunities in store for the children this term with topic work exploring the fascinating country of China – with a topic day planned for later this month. In ICT we will continue to focus on programming algorithms using Lego WeDo to build and control a mechanical vehicle. The children will also use ICT too as part of a fundraising project to ‘grow £5’ later in the term.
There will be an emphasis throughout school on the children demonstrating and understanding our school values as part of the Character Curriculum. We want to encourage the children to develop these important character strengths: Self-awareness, Courage, Personal Responsibility, Motivation, Resilience, Creativity, Respect, Empathy, Tolerance, Trust and Inclusion.
It is important that you encourage your child to read at home every day and continue to listen to your child read as much as possible. This will help develop reading speed and fluency, both of which will be necessary for your child to successfully read and understand the lengthy texts which make up the reading test paper in May. The children will have limited time to read and answer these questions. We will especially expect those children who are receiving additional support in reading in school to be reading regularly at home, to an adult wherever possible. We will reward children who consistently read at home, we ask that you sign your child's organiser to make sure they get the recognition they deserve.
As well as reading with your child, please encourage them to practise times tables for five minutes each day. The national expectation is that they should already know all of the tables up to 12 times 12. Even if your child knows these, they should regularly rehearse them to maintain the rapid recall needed at this level. Someone testing them at random each day will have a huge impact on them being able to respond quickly and use these facts accurately in calculations.
Homework will usually be given out on a Friday and collected in on the following Thursday. As well as this, spellings will also be given out weekly on a Monday and tested the following Monday. As the SATs draw closer, the children will also continue to be given regular homework from the CGP books (SATs-themed) to sharpen up their skills.
P.E will take place on Tuesdays with coaches from Notts County FC. However, we may also do additional P.E sessions throughout the week, so please ensure your child’s P.E kit is kept in school at all times.
If you have any questions or comments, or would like to help out with anything we are doing in school, then please feel free to come and speak to us.
Thank you for your support,
Mr Poole and Mrs Myles.

Y6 – Autumn 2017
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back to school. We hope you had a restful break over the summer. This is an important year for your child as they bring to a culmination their time at St Mary’s and we will do everything we can to ensure it’s their best year yet!
In literacy we will begin gearing them up for their SATs in May by arming them with the writing, grammar and reading comprehension skills to enable them to achieve their very best. In maths we will work hard to increase their arithmetic speed and boost their understanding to help them answer a range of reasoning questions too. We also have some exciting opportunities in store for the children this term with topic work exploring volcanoes and natural disasters. While in ICT we will focus on the important subject of e-Safety by deepening their understanding so they can write and perform an e-Safety rap.

There may be additional homework given throughout this term for groups or individuals if we feel that it can help your child. Please ask them regularly if they have anything to do at home and support them in getting this done and returned to school as soon as they can.
P.E will take place on Thursdays with Mrs North. However, we may also do additional P.E sessions throughout the week, so please ensure your child’s P.E kit is kept in school at all times.
If you have any questions or comments, or would like to help out with anything we are doing in school, then please feel free to come and speak to us.
