Y6 RE
Sikhism Week
Year 6 celebrated Sikhism Week at St Mary’s by cordially accepting an invitation to visit Guru Nanak Satsang Gurdwara Sikh Temple on Forest Road in Nottingham. The children paid their respects by covering their heads and removing their shoes at the temple as they learned all about the 500-year-old religion, which began in the Punjab region of India.
As well as hearing more about their god, Guru Nanak, the children spent time in their place of worship to find out more about their weekly services and played a range of traditional percussion instruments.

Retreat
Year 6 spent their final retreat with Frances learning about the power of healing. After studying the scriptures to find out more about various miracles in the bible, they performed a drama and then produced a poster to advertise pilgrimages which can be made to Lourdes.
Stained Glass Windows
The children created a stained glass window each to mark the feast of Pentecost. It required steady hands and an eye for detail.
Lenten Day
On Ash Wednesday Y6 took part a variety of activities to commemorate the beginning of Lent.
We reflected about the things Jesus did for us and what we could give up and try to do in Lent. The children discussed scripture and also attended mass and an assembly.
We then made a promise for our class mission booklet and an individual footstep to show how we are following in Jesus' steps.

Class Retreat
Y6 spent the afternoon preparing and planning a liturgy based around a bible reading of their choice in small groups. Then they performed them for the class at the end of the day to deepen the class's overall understanding.
Advent Day
The children spent the morning producing a number of items to help them prepare for Advent and the coming of Jesus. They began by writing a prayer for their bauble to appear on the class Advent calendar - we will be reading one of their prayers each morning. They also decorated a candle holder for the class and helped to produce a wreath and a stable before sharing their creations and thoughts with the school in the hall.
Father David Visits Y6 to Discuss Vocation
On October 18, Father David held a question and answer session with the children in Year 6 to fit in with their ‘Vocation’ topic. The children began with a welcome and prayers before putting a variety of questions to him about his role as a priest, his duties and how his calling has impacted his life, the community and his family around him. The children were extremely engaged and intrigued to hear all about the role and the commitment it entails.
Our Y5 Work

Y5 Assembly - Community
The children prepared and performed their class assembly, based on the theme ‘Community’. Throughout the assembly, there were aspects of: dance, singing, drama, prayers and collective worship. It was a joy to see the children work so well together and put on such a fantastic performance - well done Year 5!
RE - Lenten Promises
During our Lent reflection day, the children thought about and began to carry out their Lenten promises. They wrote their promises on a piece of art work, which went on our display.

Through our RE topic 'Ourselves', the children have been exploring the qualities and talents that God has given them, and how to portray those qualities in everyday life. We spread out across the hall floor to make mind maps, which we then followed up with a quality piece of writing in our RE books.
Our Year 4 Work...
‘Calling’ Retreat Day with Gabby
During our ‘Calling’ topic, Gabby paid us a visit and spent the morning with us playing games, reading prayers and thinking about how we have special callings in life.
We created a special liturgy to show this and reflected on our own calling as Christians to share the good news. Thanks for coming, Gabby! |
